These rules and expectations are to make the classroom a safe space for everyone to learn from each other.
- Critique ideas, not people. You might not agree with everything that people say but remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and has every right to express it.
- Take space, make space. Your participation in class is encouraged and valued. Just be sure to let others have the time to articulate their ideas!
- Use “I” statements. Use “I” instead of the royal “we” to avoid generalizing views and experiences.
- What is said here stays here, what is learned here leaves here. Hearing other people’s stories is a really great way to learn. But keep in mind that these stories are personal and sometimes not meant to be shared beyond the classroom.
- Practice active listening. Give whoever is speaking your full attention. It’s the decent thing to do.
