Barbeque Becky, Golfcart Gail, and Cornerstone Caroline are only a few nicknames that have been shared upon social media and used to expose the inequities that many black people face in white spaces. There are plenty of other occurrences, many being white women seemingly protecting their communities from people of color, that have spawned nicknames that are often deemed as ‘cutesy’, thus creating an issue in itself. Many believe that these names downplay the seriousness of the situation of open racism while others agree that these names carry shame upon those people that they deserve as a result of these incidents. The act of bringing in the police to remove black people is one of tension, often being an encounter that leads to violence, but seen as an act of protection in the perspective of white communities while an act of aggression from people in communities of color.

The DAPL issue brings upon an environmental and cultural tragedy but also brings public attention though mass media on the issue. The issue, like the Flint waters, is one of a larger scheme to disregard people of color, ignoring ethics and highlighting corporate influence. The pipeline not only is an environmental loss but also a cultural loss as it runs through a reservation owned by the Standing Rock Tribe. Attempts to smear the campaign to stop the pipelines show the underlying priorities of the government, choosing capital over people.

Just about two hours away from Flint is the small town of Evart, where there exists the Muskegon River, the site where Nestle continues to pump clean water into water bottle to be sold. Instead of redirecting the water source, the government chose to continue using the Flint River water and not only was the water too toxic to even water plants, Flint residents continued to pay some of the highest water bills in the nation, . The city has been disregarded and its resident cast aside, thus no changes made to improve their well being. With a history of deteriorating infrastructure and collapsing economy, the city lives in a crisis with many available solutions and yet no actions made while at the same time, corporations continue to profit from these struggles. Flint is an example where people of color have been discriminated against not only by society but also by the government itself, holding control over what issues should have priority based not on urgency but on capital.

Florida, one of the states that many Puerto Ricans took shelter in, is strongly influenced by the aftereffects of Hurricane Maria and with a large Latino population, many politicians focused on the issue of disaster aid during their midterm election campaigns. With the lack of support from the US government in provided federal aids for recovery, Puerto Rico suffered high casualties and loss of power and water for months. High turnout from the Latino voters created a difference in the election result, making Florida a swing state. Several groups have mobilized to promote the Latino population in the state to vote, especially the Puerto Rican citizens who have a more direct effect from the results of the election.

African Americans face not only the issue of leaving the ghettos but also the issue of remaining safe in white neighborhoods. Black communities are trapped within ghettos through tactics of law and violence and although several acts have worked to prevent discrimination of territory, the hostility that continue to exist within white communities has prevented black families from moving into them. An interesting fact mentioned by the article author is that a majority of race violence takes place at the border between black and white communities, where people of different races are more frequently meeting and thus being confronted.

Muslim ghettos are an establishment regulated by the Dutch government but recently lawmakers are attempting to overturn these laws that are isolating the Muslim population. These ghettos are similar to the black ghettos in the US. Though no laws helped in creating the black ghettos, no laws prevented the creation of those ghettos either until they became an established structure already. These issues are often disregarded by the general public as much of the population is not affected by these ghettos and some communities improved due to keeping them white communities. Furthermore, many lawmakers do not feel obligated in preventing the creation of the ghettos since the black population is likely the minority population and thus no improvements are made for them.

Redlining is one of the tactics used by white real estate agents in a combined systematic effort to discriminate against the black population. Despite the Fair Housing Act banning the housing discrimination, the effects of the method is still felt today as we continue to see the structure of the ghettos. However, companies have discovered new ways to discriminate using old structures built before the FHA was established, for example digital redlining which provide slower internet services in poorer neighborhoods, those that are more likely to house residents who are people of color.

The end of war on one front is another way to say the start of war in another. War is counter-intuitive, sending a nation’s population and risking its people in a fight over land and capital. Despite the importance of human life, we often forget about the battles taking place outside of our homes where those lives are essentially being used in a battle for territory. The fight for land has been an ongoing conquest for all nations, from the occupation of European colonists to the endless wars in the Middle East, and these wars emphasize the importance of land, putting it equal to money but more important than humanity. Each of these wars represent a similar opinion over land and one way or another, land is transferred from one party to another, whether that be through elimination and replacement or a monetary transaction.
