For this weeks topic for white space, I would like to share this photo with the phrase “Where are you really from?” I had asked this kind of questions a lot while I was staying in US. This was also the topic that came up in the class where people asking people their place of birth, decisions that were made upon who people look and their skin colors. Every time I hear these questions makes me really awkward and makes me feel that I’m not part of this country and feels left out. They try to categorize us by asking those kind of questions and do not acknowledge that this questions can be very offensive and rude to other people. But I don’t think its just a “white” space.
I personally hear these kinds of questions like where are you really from, can you speak Korean from not just from the white people, but also from the people with similar race. I feel like some people just want to categorize people into the country’s that they are from. I believe that these kinds of behaviors should change and people should acknowledge that it’s offensive to many other people and there are lot of topics to chat with.source: https://www.cnn.com/2017/06/20/opinions/where-are-you-really-from-vega-opinion/index.html

For this weeks topic for Mass incarceration and the making of a racial undercaste. Is the photo of a person who is protesting with the sign that says “Am I Next?” I believe that this photo shows that no one is safe from incarceration and the racial undercaste. It could be your turn when it comes to the incarceration and the racial undercaste, especially for the people who’s race is not white. The ones whos been discriminated, lived under prejudice, stereotype. It reminds of the me the accident happened few month ago, where in New York, some white woman who blocked black neighbor from entering the building, or the prejudice that a lot of people have that blacks are born to be an athlete. I believe that these are all kinds of racial undercaste.

For this week’s photo share about this week’s theme segregation and education. This photo is very obvious of the segregation in education where the students are protesting that they would not go to school with black students. I would like to talk about the what we have discussed in class, whether I would send my child to diversified school or not, which is not classified as a “better” school. First I could not understand the intention of the question because, I never thought that the race would matter to decide if the school is “better” or not. I believe that the level of education depends on how students are interested in the learning, student to teacher ratio, how well the school is equipped or etc and the race does not matter for making a school a “better” school.

This image is the image that I want to share with this week’s photo share about segregation continued. Segregation has been a hot topic for a long time and still exist as a important topic to talk about. Even though I’m a foreigner and I haven’t lived in US for a long time. I could see how the communities, cities and towns are segregated, there are ghettos, white dominant places, Asian dominant places or mexican dominant places. I believe that separation not only exist in the space but also separation also exist in the education. The photo that I would like to share is about the map and percentage of which degree of white kids attending majority-white schools and black kids attending majority-non white schools. The separation seems so obvious to me and I believe that the major reason for this is because of segregation in space and living space

For this weeks photo share, I would like to talk about the ‘voluntourism’ which was the topic that came out for the discussion in class. The voluntourism is known for good purpose, helping people in the third world country and exploring a different country or culture. They appeal that they want to be the part of ‘making things better’ for society however, if we look at closely it’s mostly made up situation. For example, there was once a article about the sending their children to live at orphanages and get paid to do so. For the worst case, getting involved in exploitation of children. Voluntourism is not something that we know, it is something that hurts them.

The image that I chose for this week relates to our conversation on white fragility. This is one slide of a cartoon that shows that the woman is ordering a coffee mentioning “Ok, then… black coffee and white half & half” where it shows the sensitivity of white people on the word “black” and the word “race” that is written on the sign. I believe that this could express the term “white fragility” itself. Also, when I saw this cartoon, it reminded me of the term “Political Correctness” where everything has to be equal and right. Like they have to mention every other races and minorities, to be correct and for the equality, which it doesn’t have to be like that. I believe that for both “white fragility” and “political correctness” they want to avoid any kinds of critics or being accused of ignorance.

I chose this photo for one of this week’s theme #NoDAPL that we have discussed in class on Monday. The reason I chose this is because, I thought it was strong enough to show the seriousness water contamination the pipeline has created. I believe that water is source that is needed for human. It’s critical and so important that we used and consume every second and every time. However, from the photo the line “NO WATER CONTACT” came shocking to me. People who are living around that area, have to endure the pain that they receive because of the oil spill.

For this week’s theme of “Race and environmental disasters: Hurricanes Katrina and Maria”, I decided to chose this photo to share. I chose this photo of Katrina victims finding a high ground place to put themselves in the safe place. As it is shown in the source there are so many people inside and outside of the Superdome in New Orleans, as you can see most of the people who suffered from this natural disaster was colored. Also, it’s possible to catch how tragedy it was by looking the water level that has risen up just beneath highway and the Superdome.

For this weeks photo share, I chose this art for the Segregation and its hazards. The reason why I chose this art is because that segregation is not only about the living it could be also about the segregation in education. I believe that this is one of the hazards of segregation within in our lives and society. I believe that this art shows that there is segregation in education, depends on how your parents are wealthy or not. The ones who are wealthy gets higher chance of getting better education such like private schools, private tutors and having lower student to teacher ratios.

The photo that I decided to share for week 3 is the is picture, since this photo clearly and definitely shows the segregation between the race. Now days we don’t see this kind of sign that shows and obvious segregation in our classroom or any other places. By looking at this picture, it is apparent that white people wanted to separate themselves from not only the Blacks but also with the people of colors and put a fences or a boundaries. From this photo, I was able to see how vicious people was at that time to the people with colors. They not only segregated and put boundaries between the people with colors but also, put up a sign to inform and those who aren’t white, cannot be in the same classroom.

The image I have chosen for this week represents the space or land that shows the significant different inequality, between not only the different race but also with the same race and ethnicity. This is picture of the city in South Korea that is going to be going through a redevelopment. Those houses below the skyscrapers are going to crushed and torn apart for people who are living in skyscrapers and better looking , such as apartment or a mall. Those houses are very old and worn out. However, the reason for redevelopment is not because of it’s age, it’s happening because of gentrification. People with money and power, are wanting to get rid of the places. The reason behind is because the people who own the land and lives near this place doesn’t like the looks of this place, which is the significant part of determining the price of the real estate.
