Our class recently visited Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. I had been there once before during Chicano park day, but this was the first time I was really able to take in the murals and neighborhood without there being a huge crowd!
After learning about the history of the park, we had an opportunity to walk around and explore. The murals are intricate, made with love and dedication. Despite the freeway being right over our heads, the park was serene and peaceful, a refuge in the city. I took this opportunity to look at the murals and get a picture of my favorite (not sure who the subject of the mural is, does anyone know?) I started getting thirsty so I decided to walk around the neighborhood and try to find some iced tea. I found a cute little tea shop called Chikita Cafe, locally run and tucked away in a residential area. It’s decorated with motifs of Latinx pride and bright colors, making it feel like an extension of the park. Thankfully, Starbucks has yet to creep into Barrio Logan!
