Antonio Magallan is a 15-year-old high school sophomore at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista, California, who identifies as half-Hispanic and half-White and is currently involved with Chula Vista College Institute. Throughout the interview, Antonio recounted his experiences in education and finding success in the classroom with the help and support of teachers and his family. He also recounts some of the challenges in finding motivation in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, his beginnings in getting involved with Chula Vista College Institute, and the wide variety of passions and interests that have been spurred from his childhood, such as creating pieces of art and exploring areas of engineering/mechanics. The memories of his childhood and the difficulties he encountered throughout, regarding his transition between multiple schools and maintaining strong familial connections, particularly with his father who served in the military, are also discussed extensively. This interview covers topics such as education, military, engineering, family, and the future.
The interview was conducted via Zoom due to COVID-19 protocol and social distancing guidelines. The interview was conducted by Robert Chung, a first-year History major at UCSD who is interested in US History and Culture, specifically with regards to the historical narratives of marginalized communities and populations.
