Oumnia Konate is a 13 year-old Sudanese-American who was born and raised in San Jose, California before moving to San Diego- more specifically Normal Heights neighborhood and now residing in University Heights. She is currently an eighth grade student at Lewis Middle School moving onto Patrick Henry High School. At the age of 3, Oumnia developed a relationship with the Southern Sudanese Community Center with a connection through her cousins and grew up knowing Chuol Tut- Executive Director of the Southern Sudanese Community Center. This interview details a personal insight on Oumnia’s life, her connections to culture and community as a member of SSCC as well as life amongst the pandemic. Therefore, this interview was conducted via Zoom in order to practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview was conducted by Millen Mengis, a 4th year Communication major at UCSD who is interested in connecting with the world through narrative-making through media, design, product and oral storytelling.
